If the joint pain becomes worse over time or affects daily tasks, it should not be ignored. This can happen if there is an underlying joint condition, like osteoarthritis or inflammation, that the therapy brings to light. For some, the pain fades away after the body gets used to the hormone changes. The pain can happen in any joint, but certain joints are more commonly affected. These patterns can make it hard to tell whether testosterone therapy is the cause. This fluid can build up in the joints, leading to swelling, stiffness, and pain. When testosterone levels are restored, the body can better maintain healthy muscles, bones, and joints. Low testosterone can indeed cause joint pain by affecting the health of your cartilage, increasing inflammation, and reducing muscle mass that supports your joints. We will explore the role of testosterone in maintaining joint health, discuss the symptoms and diagnosis of Low T-related joint pain, and outline the available treatment options. When testosterone levels drop, which can happen naturally as part of the aging process or due to certain medical conditions, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, including joint pain. TRT helps restore testosterone levels, potentially improving muscle mass, bone density, and reducing inflammation, which can alleviate joint pain. Also, our study has a moderately large sample size, with 272 men and women age ≥60 years. Notably, however, symptoms are considered the patient‐relevant feature of OA rather than the extent of radiographic changes (45). On the other hand, we may have missed such an association due to the sample selection, where the most severely affected knee had undergone surgery and could not be assessed radiographically with respect to K/L grade. On the one hand, this finding is in line with prior studies where symptoms and the extent of radiographic changes show discrepant findings (36, 44). Further, an influence of testosterone on nociceptive processing (19, 20) and inflammatory response has been suggested in several studies (7, 9, 10, 11), all of which concern important pathways in the development of OA (42, 43). With regard to subgroups by BMI, there were inconsistent signals for men in the nonoperated knee. Differences between men and women were assessed by using Student’s t‐test for continuous variables and a chi‐square test for categorical variables. As more research becomes available and new treatments are developed, people are gaining a better understanding of how hormone therapy can help with joint pain. Combining these healthy habits with testosterone therapy can help you manage joint pain more effectively and improve your overall quality of life. A balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrients is essential for maintaining healthy joints and supporting the body’s response to testosterone therapy. These can worsen when the body undergoes changes due to testosterone therapy. Some people are more likely to develop joint pain due to their genetic background. This hormone shift may be more extreme in individuals with a higher body fat percentage, since fat cells can convert testosterone to estrogen. Testosterone therapy sometimes causes water retention or muscle growth, which may add to the body’s weight and increase joint stress. Carrying too much body weight puts constant pressure on the joints, especially the hips, knees, and ankles. Gout causes sharp joint pain, usually in the big toe, ankle, or knee. When testosterone levels rise, it may affect how the body handles fluid and salt. If your testosterone levels start to decline, your doctor might suggest changes in your therapy or lifestyle to help maintain healthy levels and prevent joint issues. By keeping an eye on your testosterone levels, you can catch any significant drops early and take action before symptoms like joint pain begin to develop. Healthy testosterone levels help maintain the cartilage that cushions your joints and reduces inflammation, which is the body's response to injury or damage. The main goal of TRT is to bring testosterone levels back to a normal range, which can help alleviate symptoms like joint pain. In summary, joint pain can be a frustrating and debilitating condition, but understanding the role of testosterone in joint health can help you take control of your symptoms. Many people may not immediately connect their joint pain with hormone levels, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. These factors can all contribute to joint pain and discomfort over time. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the risk of joint inflammation and pain. Testosterone helps maintain the strength and integrity of bones and muscles, which support joints. In both genders, it plays a crucial role in regulating libido, mood, and even joint health. Always consult with a medical professional to determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific health needs.
